Kyoto’s famous beef cutlet experience is expanding in Sydney, with Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu opening its second Australian restaurant in Chatswood on Saturday, 19 September 2026.

Sydney’s Japanese dining scene is about to welcome a new addition to the North Shore, as Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu opens the doors to its new 90-seat Chatswood restaurant from 11am on Saturday, 19 September.

Located at 45 Victor Street, Chatswood, opposite Westfield Chatswood and just moments from Chatswood Station, the opening follows the arrival of Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu in Australia with its first restaurant at Parkline Place in Sydney CBD.

The Chatswood opening marks the next chapter for the Kyoto-born brand in Australia, bringing one of Japan’s distinctive ways of enjoying beef to one of Sydney’s busiest dining precincts.

So, what exactly is Gyukatsu?

While tonkatsu has long been familiar to Australian diners, gyukatsu puts beef centre stage.

The beef cutlet is lightly coated in delicate breadcrumbs and fried quickly at high temperature, creating a crisp outer layer while keeping the beef tender and juicy inside.

But the experience does not end when the plate reaches the table.

Diners are served their own personal hot stone, allowing them to finish each slice to their preferred doneness. Different sauces and accompaniments let diners explore different flavours throughout the meal.

It is part dining, part discovery and a very different way to experience Japanese beef cutlet.

From Kyoto to Sydney, and now Chatswood

Founded in Kyoto, Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu has grown internationally while remaining focused on the dish at the heart of its name.

Its arrival in Chatswood gives North Shore diners easier access to the experience while expanding the brand's presence beyond Sydney CBD.

The new Chatswood restaurant will seat approximately 90 guests and will operate on a walk-in basis only, with no reservations required.

For those who have never tried gyukatsu before, the opening provides a chance to discover why this Japanese beef cutlet has developed such a following. For existing fans, there is now another place in Sydney to enjoy it.
